Where does Full Grain Leather come from?

Full grain leather is obtained from the layer just underneath the hair of animals. Being the outermost layer, it is the strongest and most durable kind of leather. This is because the grain pattern in this part of the hide is very tight, thus also being able to resist moisture very well.

Animals from which full grain leather is obtained include cows, goats, kangaroos, pigs, sheep and also alligators.

How is Leather Made?

Making full grain leather takes place as follows:

Raw Material preparation

Once the hides arrive in the tannery they undergo preparation as follows:

• They are packed in rock salt for preservation, where they are folded and stored in pallets for up to thirty days.
• Haired hides are normally placed in soaking drums for a couple of days. This removes salt, dirt and some soluble protein.
• Hair removals follow, where the hides are dipped in substances such as lime, which not only removes hair but also softens the hide.
• The hides are then split horizontally by a splitting machine, which then produces the different layers of leather such as top layer( which is also full grain)
• The physical part of the fat is then removed through a process known as slicking.

The next stage of making full grain leather is tanning.

Tanning

This is the process through which leather is made more durable and less susceptible to decomposition by permanently altering the protein structure of the skin. Vegetable tannage is used in this case, where the hides are loaded into drums with a mixture of vegetable tanning agents. The drums then rotate up to eight hours. This process makes the leather durable, soft and supple.

The final stage of making full grain leather is crusting

Crusting

The hides are then thinned, re-tanned and undergo lubrication. Re-tanning modifies the physical characteristics of the leather to suit its final use. The final stages involve processing through to dried crust. Such processes include oiling, brushing, padding, spraying and glazing.
